Shredding CDs or DVDs makes this model sound louder than when it’s shredding plastic credit cards or paper, but the sound levels we recorded-83 decibels for CDs, 70 for credit cards, and mid-60s for stacks of paper-were bang on the average of all shredders we tested. But the eight-sheet Amazon Basics still produced consistently high-security, P4-level-size shreds-enough to give us peace of mind that identity thieves or snooping neighbors wouldn’t be able to piece together the original documents. This shredder produces larger shreds than some other micro-cut models we tested-most notably, the Fellowes Powershred 8MC5 8-Sheet Micro-Cut Paper Shredder (which unfortunately had temperature and jamming problems). We measured the level of noise during shredding using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s sound level meter app.We noted how easy or difficult it was to empty the wastebasket, and how many pages the bin could hold before needing to be emptied. We didn’t test with paper clips in this round because in previous tests we found that they tended to break the machines. We tested whether the shredder could destroy staples, credit cards, and CDs (if the shredder maker advertised that it could). We timed the shredder’s run time and cooldown time.Stick to the maximum page capacity recommended by the manufacturer, or fewer, to avoid overworking your shredder and potentially shortening its life.) We purposely inserted more pages than the maximum load to see when the shredder would jam and how easily we could clear jams.We put batches of letter-size paper through (based on the shredder’s recommended maximum load) in succession to see if the shredder would jam or overheat under normal operating conditions.Ability to shred stapled documents, paper-clipped documents, CDs, and credit cards: Handling stapled documents and plastic credit cards is a must for any shredder. ![]() The shorter, the better, if you want to get back to your shredding job as soon as possible. ![]() Cooldown time: This refers to how long your shredder’s timeout needs to be after you exceed the run time.In our testing, most of the shredders’ bins got full within 10 to 15 minutes of nonstop shredding, rendering claims of ultra-high run times moot. Less-expensive shredders have run times of under five minutes, while the best home and small-office models have run times rated at 10 minutes or more. Run time: The higher the shredder’s run time, the more you can continuously shred before the unit needs to take a break and cool down. Most of the micro-cut shredders in our target price range can handle six to 12 sheets at a time. Page capacity: Having a shredder with a higher page capacity means you can shred more paper at once, including several folded sheets. ![]() More-expensive shredders are designed for offices where they’ll shred stacks of documents throughout the day they’re overkill for a typical one- or two-person home office. ![]()

"There is always hope that there were female warriors." "Maybe it's empowering to some extent," Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson, the lead author of the paper concluding the skeleton was a woman warrior, told The New York Times. She serves as a canvas onto which we project fantasies of vengeance and power without upsetting the status quo. Claiming the Viking woman warrior existed allows her to be co-opted as a sort of mascot for the ongoing women's movement. So why does the myth of the Viking woman warrior endure? The answer has to do, in part, with our shifting ideas about what female rage, strength, and empowerment look like. Instead, the weapons, the clothes, and the animals found in this grave seem to have originated nearer the Caspian Sea, which is located in Central Asia. 581 are not Scandinavian, which raises the question of whether this person was a Viking at all. 581 was a warrior is also hard to confirm, because as professor of Viking studies Judith Jesch observed, the skeleton shows no marks or wear that might be associated with battle woulds.įinally, the grave objects in Bj. We still don't know what this meant to the Vikings, but it does mean that Bj. On the other hand, it wasn't uncommon for female skeletons to be buried with male-coded objects, such as weapons. On the one hand, there seems to have been a clear delineation between men and women: On the family farm, chores were gender-coded as either male or female from the sagas, we learn that cross-dressing was grounds for divorce. While the DNA evidence suggests this skeleton belonged to a female, we don't know enough about how gender and biological sex related to one another during the Viking Age to conclusively say how this person identified. In fact, we can't say for certain that this individual was a woman, a warrior, or even a Viking. In other words, there is very little in the history books to support the claim that the skeleton in Bj. But similarly to the Valkyries, there is no evidence they ever really existed. In addition to the Valkyries, the Icelandic sagas mention shield maidens, women who wielded weapons and fought in battle. People needed to know how to fight and how to defend themselves. At the same time, Viking Age Scandinavia was a violent society, fueled by vendettas and power struggles. In popular culture, Vikings are mainly known for their fighting abilities, but being a warrior was only a part-time occupation in a life otherwise based on farming and fishing, in which both men and women were needed for the family to survive. 800–1050), men and women from what is today Norway, Sweden, and Denmark set sail to new lands and spread out across a vast area reaching from the North Atlantic to the Caspian Sea and the Mediterranean. ![]() That we so desperately want to believe in the Viking woman warrior, despite evidence to the contrary, says a lot about the ongoing women's movement, and betrays our rigid ideals of how we want female strength to be displayed.ĭuring the Viking Age (c. 581 had been a warrior is based on some wobbly assumptions. The antiquity of the pear- shaped lute-like instrument is generally accepted nowadays, mainly owing to Miss Schlesinger own. The courses are numbered sequentially, counting from the highest pitched, so that the chanterelle is the first course, the next pair of strings is the second course, etc. Like the d, the European lute has a deep, pear-shaped body, a neck with a bent-back pegbox, and strings hitched to a tension, or guitar-type, bridge glued to the instrument’s belly. In later Baroque lutes two upper courses are single. This instrument was taken to Europe in the 13th century by way of Spain and by returning crusaders and is still played in Arab countries. The lute’s strings are arranged in courses, of two strings each, though the highest-pitched course usually consists of only a single string, called the chanterelle. Modern manufacturers make both gut and nylon strings, and both are in common use. Strings were historically made of animal gut, usually from the small intestine of sheep (sometimes in combination with metal) and are still made of gut or a synthetic substitute, with metal windings on the lower-pitched strings. They fray with use, and must be replaced from time to time. The frets are made of loops of gut tied around the neck. The bridge, sometimes made of a fruitwood, is attached to the soundboard typically at 1/5 to 1/7 the belly length. Click the answer to find similar crossword clues. The neck is made of light wood, with a veneer of hardwood (usually ebony) to provide durability for the fretboard beneath the strings. The Chinese pipa, a four-string plucked lute, descends from West and Central Asian prototypes and appeared in China during the Northern Wei dynasty (386534). The soundboard is a teardrop-shaped thin flat plate of resonant wood. Some date it back to the times of Ancient Egypt, based on some images and artefacts of an instrument that looks like the lute, but the oldest pictorial record of a lute dates back to the over 5000 years ago.
